How to Feed for Deficiencies and Excesses in Dogs using TCVM

A part of our Gently Cooked Wholefood Recipes, Constitutions is an exclusive line of diets based on the Holistic Food Therapy that follows the practice of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), formulated by Dr. Judy Morgan.

These diets are created for pets with particular deficiencies and excesses stemming from the symbolic representation of the elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.

Each element is associated with organ systems and a specific trait, personality or “constitution” of a pet. They can be predisposed to health issues, dependent on the organs associated with its element.

The theory holds that balance between the elements is necessary for health, and imbalances can lead to physical and behavioral disorders. The Five Elements are interconnected through various interacting cycles. They may nourish and support, or they may restrain or control another element. Knowing how each element affects the others enables us to use Food Therapy to support or suppress a deficient or excess element.

exampleRight side: balance between the elements: Fire Element.
Water controls Fire. Fire controls Metal. Fire creates Earth.
Left side:imbalance between the elements: Fire Element.
Excess Water extinguishes Fire. Excess Fire dries out Water.
Deficient Wood extinguishes Fire. Excess Fire destroys Wood. Fire represses Metal.

ELEMENTS SUPPORT OR CONTROL IMBALANCES

Balance.

Generating Cycle — when every element generates another element, there is harmony.

Controlling Cycle— when elements keeps other element in check so it does not become excessive.

Imbalance.

Abnormal Generating Cycle— happens when there’s deficiency or an excess of another element.

Over Controlling Cycle—  can also cause imbalance.

Insulting Cycle— occurs when control goes in the opposite direction, the element becomes destructive.

HOW DOES THIS RELATE TO DIET?

TCVM's Five Elements provide a framework that aids one in making food choices for their pets that will most benefit them at a given time. Ingredients (food) and/or our Dr. Judy Morgan's Constitution Diets serve as Holistic Food Therapy through this profiling. Ingredients can be examined using food energetics— whether a protein is cooling, warming, or neutral. More specifically, feeding our diets (e.g., Fire Diet), which have a distinct set of carefully selected ingredients and, together as a whole, have holistic healing properties to serve a pet's need (or constitution).

Pairing Your Dog's Profile to Their Element.

Start by determining your dog’s personality traits with a questionnaire that describes your pet in a series of categories. Dr. Judy Morgan’s personality quiz will help you evaluate your pet’s issues and examine symptoms of excesses and deficiencies to recommend the best food choice(s) to support your pet’s balance.

Once your pet’s profile is identified, one or several Constitution Diets can serve that specific pet’s needs. Visit AllProvide Pet Personality Quiz

SUMMARY

How to Feed for Deficiencies and Excesses in Dogs

The foundation of TCVM is the balance of internal energy. When a pet is in balance
they have good health. Out of balance leads to disease. Feeding our formulations based upon a pet’s constitution can support or control imbalances. They may nourish and support, or they may restrain or control another element through the properties of ingredients working as a whole. Knowing how each element affects the others enables us to use Food Therapy to support or suppress a deficient or excessive element. To determine what diet to feed your dog, identify their profile by taking our free quiz that uses a system of classification which should be able to help you understand what your pet's constitution is. This should pair your dog's specific needs of achieving balance to one or several Constitution Diets.
