General Feeding Advice

Adult Dogs:
Aim to feed 2-3% of your pet’s ideal body weight, typically split into two meals a day. For pets that need to put on weight or have higher nutritional needs, increase each meal amount over time until they have achieved the optimum weight. If the animal needs to lose weight, reduce the amount fed per day until they reach their optimal weight.

Smaller dogs generally have a higher metabolism and may require slightly more, while large dogs typically need a little less.

Tailor feeding to the needs of the individual pet. The activity level, age, and size of your dog or cat will ultimately determine how much to feed them.

Puppies need roughly double the amount of food as an adult of the same size. Aim to feed 5-6% of their body weight per day, spread over three to four meals per day.

Reduce to two to three meals around 6 months of age.
As they approach maturity, start reducing the total daily amount to 2-3% of their estimated body weight.

Remember – there are no hard and fast rules for feeding – every animal has a different metabolism and nutritional requirements, so tailor feeding to suit your pet.

** Stated feeding amounts are starting guidelines and may need to be adjusted to your pet’s age, activity level, and overall health etc.

Adult Cats:
Adult cats require approximately 30 calories per pound per day over two meals to maintain their weight.

Kittens need approximately 60 calories per pound per day for growth.  Kittens 6-12 weeks of age need to be fed 4 times a day.  At 12 weeks to 6 months, feed 3 times a day, reducing to 2 times a day at 6 months of age.

How to calculate 2% to 3% of my pet’s weight?
We’re glad you asked. It’s very straightforward. We’ll walk you through it.

Calculation Summary:

  1. (Your pet’s weight in pounds) x 16 (ounces in a pound) = Pet’s weight in ounces
  2. (Weight in ounces) x % to feed (2% -3% on average) = Ounces to feed per day

Calculation Explanation:
For this example, we’ll use a 10lb healthy adult dog.

* Most healthy adult dogs do well on 2.5% of their body weight in raw or gently cooked foods.
* Change the percentage for your pet’s needs: 5-6% puppies, 2% overweight, 3% underweight or high energy.
* Use your pet’s current weight in pounds, multiply by 16 (ounces in a pound) to get their weight in ounces.

10lb average adult dog x 16oz = 160oz (This is your pet’s approx. weight in ounces)

Multiply their weight in ounces by the percentage you want to feed.

160oz x 2.5% = 4oz (This is how much raw food this dog needs a day)
